Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin's casket arrives for funeral

Sing For The Queen: Chaka Khan Is Nervous About Performing For Aretha Franklin’s Funeral

The funeral for Aretha Franklin, known as the Queen of Soul, was held on Friday in Detroit.

Franklin, who died at her Detroit home from pancreatic cancer, began her musical career as a child singing gospel at the city's New Bethel Baptist Church, where her father, CL Franklin, was the pastor, famous for his hypnotic sermons.

A whole host of global stars are expected to perform and give speeches at the funeral, including Ariana Grande, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson and more.

The service will reflect Franklin's strong gospel roots.

"I just loved her", he said, adding that he was honored to have met her later in life.

She was carried in a gleaning casket plated in 24-karat gold.

"She lived with faith, not without failure, but overcoming her failures".

Scheduled remarks from former President Bill Clinton, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and the Rev. Jesse Jackson signify Franklin's political and social influence.

Floral arrangements from such singers as Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett and from the family of Otis Redding, whose "Respect" Franklin transformed and made her signature song, were set up in a hallway outside the sanctuary.

Aretha's ex-husband, Mr Turman, appeared on Good Morning Britain after her death and told the hosts about the time Sammy Davis Jr. introduced her to royalty. "We used to talk about that - we saw a lot of soldiers go".

Ariana Grande celebrated Aretha Frankin's life and legacy on Friday (August 31) with a powerful tribute at the late singer's funeral service.

However, other fans tweeted support, pointing out that even if Hill's performance wasn't note-perfect, it came from the heart, because she and Franklin were friends and the Franklin family clearly wanted her there.

"It's the key to freedom", Clinton said.

Sabrina Owens, Franklin's niece, told the AP she started putting thoughts to paper about events earlier this year as her aunt's health failed.

The singer looked awkward during the exchange but laughed it off. "Girl, I gotta give you all your respect", he said before asking the crowd for another round of applause.
