Nadal through to round two after Ferrer retires

David Ferrer 'It will be my last US Open. Facing Rafael Nadal is a gift'

Rafael Nadal moved through at the US Open as David Ferrer's final grand slam match ended with an injury on Monday.

Nadal, the world number one, breezed through the first set without facing a break point but the 36-year-old Ferrer fought back in the second, breaking Nadal twice before the injury forced him to stop with the score at 6-3. 3-4.

Murray's successor as British number one Kyle Edmund, seeded 16, slumped to a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Paolo Lorenzi, the 36-year-old Italian, who hadn't played on a hard court since the Australian Open in January.

Ferrer, whose decision brought the curtain down on his final appearance at a grand slam, said he had taken an injection before the match but was in obvious discomfort and needed treatment before he pulled the pin.

"I have great memories of this tournament and I am just sorry that I couldn't finish it tonight".

Greek rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first main-draw match at Flushing Meadows, beating veteran qualifier Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, while there was an emphatic 6-0 6-3 6-4 victory over Donald Young for third seed Juan Martin del Potro.

In the women's section, Serena Williams made a triumphant return, launching her bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam victory with a straight-sets win as top-seeded Simona Halep made dubious history with a first-round exit.

One of the most talented players to never win a Slam; Ferrer had the misfortune of being born into an era where Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray dominated the circuit.

Ending with the tag line, "It's only insane until you do it", the spot for her shoe and clothing sponsor shows video of Williams as a young girl, practicing with her father, interspersed with clips of her playing as an adult at Grand Slam tournaments. Cilic was also finalist at Wimbledon a year ago while del Potro was a semifinalist in 2013.

Coming into NY, he's lost just three matches all year.

"I'm improving tournament after tournament, match after match. He's one of my closest friends on the tour and we faced many unbelievable moments together", Nadal said.

Both of us were playing at a good level.

Auger-Aliassime, making his Slam debut after coming through qualifying, had needed a medical timeout for an irregular hearbeat in the third set.

But the Romanian, who broke through for a first Grand Slam title at the French Open this year, had no answer for Kanepi's power.

Novak Djokovic made a winning return to the U.S. Open, fighting through extreme heat that caused him to feel sick during his match to beat Marton Ducsovics in four sets.

It was the first match at the rebuilt Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The 31-year-old has not played at a Slam since Wimbledon in 2017 and there remain serious doubts over whether or not he can last two weeks of intense best-of-five sets in NY. He was seeded 12th and with the fierce competition available in the men's event everyone was looking to either Federer or Nadal, the top two ranked players to take the title.
