Trump accuses Google of rigging search results to favor 'bad' news

Donald Trump: Google’s news service is rigged against me

President Donald Trump attacked Google in an early morning tweet on Tuesday that accused the company of prioritizing "fake news" in its search results.

President Donald Trump accused Google of rigging its search engine results to feature overwhelmingly negative coverage of him and "others".

"They have it RIGGED, for me & others", he said, blaming Google, part of Alphabet Inc., for what he said was unsafe action that promoted mainstream media outlets such as CNN and suppressed conservative political voices.

Trump gave only once specific example, saying "Fake CNN is prominent".

The blog post claimed that left-leaning media organizations made up 96 percent of the search results when "Trump News" was searched, with "left-leaning" basically meaning anything that isn't Breitbart or Infowars or PJ Media or other notably reliable places to find news that confirms your hatred of "the libs".

Likewise, there is no evidence whatsoever that Google is deliberately suppressing pro-Trump content.

And in an ominous warning he suggested the company was acting illegally and vowed to take action to "address" this "very serious situation". Kudlow added that looking into the issue meant the administration would be doing some investigation and analysis.

Asked this morning whether Google's results should be regulated by the government, Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, responded, "We're taking a look at it". Regulating Google's search algorithm in the spirit of "fairness" could result in a number of unintended consequences. But the accusation of bias has been around for a while and is a mainstay of how right-wing outlets talk about tech companies like Google.

"Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don't bias our results toward any political ideology", a Google spokesperson said in an email.

According to Google, it uses algorithms to evaluate hundreds of factors including user experience and how many other prominent sites link to a page. Bolyard also noted, however, that Bloomberg columnist Leonid Bershidsky wrote about the problem of bias earlier this year, noting that "Google's search algorithms are a black box to the public".
