USA and Russian Federation discuss 'removing Iranian presence from Syria'

How Iran welcomes American Tourists without the US Government ever knowing | Travel News

GENEVA - US President Donald Trump's national security adviser said on Thursday that he warned his Russian counterpart against meddling in the US elections in November in talks that he said also covered a phased withdrawal of Iran's presence in Syria.

Bolton said at a press conference in Geneva after meeting with his Russian counterpart that the United States is committed to the date of the application of new sanctions on Iran.

Both Bolton and Patrushev said that disagreements over the question of Russian interference in U.S. elections prevented them from issuing a joint statement. Bolton is a fervent critic of Iran's leadership, saying it supports terrorism, and has defended the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal involving Russia, China, Germany, France and Britain.

Bolton revealed that Russia's president Vladimir Putin had told president Trump he would be content if Iranian regular and irregular forces would be withdrawn from Syria but that he was not able "to do it himself".

"That was really the broad objective", he said, "we had to take the discussion that the leaders had and try and spread it out and make it more specific and find concrete ways to proceed".

There was no joint statement after the talks, because reportedly Bolton insisted that Russian Federation admit it meddled in the 2016 U.S. election, and Patrushev countered by asking the United States to stop interfering in the affairs of other countries.

The two failed to release a joint statement due to disagreements on the subject of election meddling, which was raised several times during the meeting, says Bolton.

"We are going to do other things to put pressure on Iran as well, beyond economic sanctions".

"Bolton's comments are created to continue pressuring adversaries and allies alike to make the switch to non-Iranian sources of crude and condensate", he said. "I think that during a meeting with the [US] presidential national security adviser, we will explain substantively the erroneousness of this policy the way we see it", the deputy minister said.

The two men are due to meet in Geneva for talks on Thursday in the first high-level meeting since the Russian and US presidents held talks in Helsinki in July.

"We expect that Europeans will see, as businesses all over Europe are seeing, that the choice between doing business with Iran or doing business with the United States is very clear to them", said the national security advisor.

Separately related to Syria, Bolton had a warning for Assad as speculation increases over a Russian-backed government assault on northern Idlib province, home to the last major rebel stronghold in the country.

He was asked if he is ever concerned that Trump is a "security risk" given that his former lawyer Michael Cohen admitted to campaign finance crimes in federal court on Tuesday and implicated the President by saying Trump had directed the action.

At a news conference in Jerusalem, Bolton voiced support for Israeli strikes in recent months on Syrian sites where Iranian-supplied missiles and other "threatening weapons" had been deployed.
