One Juror Kept Prosecutors From Proving Manafort Guilty On All 18 Counts

Manafort trial Long jury deliberation could be bad news for prosecution

Shortly after 4:00 p.m., the jury sent a second note to the bench indicating they had reached a verdict on eight counts and could not reach a consensus on the other ten. A judge declared a mistrial on 10 other counts the jury could not agree on.

There has been widespread speculation about whether Trump will pardon Manafort, but The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said it was not something Trump was considering.

In his tweets, Trump sought to contrast Manafort's posture with that of Michael Cohen, the president's former attorney and fixer, who on Tuesday entered a guilty plea in a Manhattan federal court on eight counts. "I think he feels bad for Manafort", she said.

"He makes a better deal if he uses me", Trump said about Cohen. "But in the end, she held out". "We will need another form please", the jury foreman wrote in a note to the court hours before Manafort's conviction and the mistrial counts were announced on Tuesday.

Juror Paula Duncan, who described herself as a strong supporter of Trump, said on Fox News that even though she believed that prosecutors had targeted Manafort in hopes of gaining information against Trump, the evidence against Manafort "was overwhelming".

"It's called flipping and it nearly ought to be illegal", the president said as he contrasted Mr Cohen's behaviour with that of Paul Manafort, his former campaign chief, who was convicted of seven counts of financial fraud and one of failing to disclose a foreign bank account.

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been found guilty of bank and tax fraud.

Prosecutors say Manafort avoided paying more than $16m in taxes over several years.

There's "no question" that Manafort is "angling for a pardon" from Trump, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley tells Here & Now's Robin Young. They were unrelated to the core of Mueller's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to subvert the 2016 US presidential election in Trump's favor.

We may never know if Trump committed a crime because a decades-old Justice Department opinion says you can't indict a sitting president.

The president on Tuesday called the outcome a "disgrace" and said the case "has nothing to do with Russian Federation collusion".

Duncan also said that she did not think that any of the jurors let their pro- or anti-Trump biases influence their final decision.

Trump has admiringly talked about how Manafort did not "flip" on him and was ebullient when Judge T.S. Ellis said that the prosecution only wanted to go after Manafort to get him. "And I said, 'We're not doing this, ' " the juror said.

His former associate Rick Gates, who in February pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and lying to investigators, co-operated with the investigation into Manafort. Legal filings from the case revealed that executives at the Trump Organization OK'd $420,000 in reimbursements to Cohen to pay of these women, then tried to hide the true nature of those payments by describing them as legal fees and retainers.
