Watch Nvidia unveil its newest GeForce graphics cards live right here

Nvidia announces new raytracing-focused RTX 2080, 2080 Ti graphics cards

The most powerful entry in Nvidia's option is the new RTX 2080 Ti, followed by the 2080, and then the 2070.

What makes the RTX cards special is Nvidia's new Turing architecture, which can render light and shadow effects, or what's called "ray tracing", more realistically than other graphics cards. While most manufacturers are keeping their cards' clock speeds under wraps, Zotac says the chip in the RTX 2080 Blower has the Nvidia-default boost clock of 1710 MHz. After showing a trailer for Battlefield V, which supports the new technology, Huang announced that the game will go into open beta on Sep. 6. Regardless of the card you choose, you'll have 4,352 CUDA Cores, along with a base clock speed of 1.35 GHZ.

Delivering this technology has been no easy feat; the ray-tracing capability in the Turing architecture was originally expected to take another 10 years to achieve.

The flagship of the bunch is the Predator Orion 9000 series, which you can get configured with up to an Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition with 18 cores and 36 threads, and now up to a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. All of this pieces are according to the website listing and the cards can be pre-ordered directly from NVIDIA over on the website. Top clockspeed for the RTX 2080 Ti hits 1,545MHz in its vanilla guise, but a "Founders Edition" will hit a nippy 1,635MHz.

This is a light rendering technique that basically gives developers the ability to calculate shadows and reflections right down to a single beam of light in order to create hyper-realistic graphics such as the ones we saw in the jaw-dropping Star Wars Unreal Engine ray tracing teaser released back at GDC in March.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Monday's Gamescom crowd that the Turing chip shipping in the consumer-grade RTX cards ships with 18.9 billion transistors, and that it includes three discrete processors: the Turing SM, the RT Core, and the Tensor Core. "Computer graphics will never be the same again", he said at the Gamescom conference in Germany.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 are available for pre-order today, and will ship on September 20.

With this comprehensive lineup for next generation graphics cards, we are confident that there will be a suitable model for every gamer looking for the next level of performance.
