Whitmer wins Democratic nomination for MI governor

Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abdul El Sayed campaigns with support from New York Democrat candidate for Congress Alexandria Ocasio Cortez at a rally on the campus of Wayne State University

Gretchen Whitmer, left, won Michigan's Democratic nomination for the state's gubernatorial primary on Tuesday night.

Whitmer also went after Bill Schuette and the eight years MI has spent with a Republican governor in office.

"The blue wave, it's a thing".

Three progressive candidates who had gotten Ocasio-Cortez's support did win Tuesday, including former MI state representative Rashida Tlaib, who won a six-candidate primary and will run unopposed in the general election.

There was also a key election for a House seat in OH, in which president Donald Trump claimed victory.

The number of women in Michigan's 14-member House delegation will at least double, to four, because of the primary results.

"Women voters are coming out to the polls in droves all over the country to vote for strong, progressive women candidates, and MI was the latest example of that", Pohl said in an email.

Schuette has long fashioned himself after Trump, and he soared in polling once receiving the endorsement of the president.

Michigan's primary came on a day when five states were conducting voting, including a closely watched special election in suburban Columbus, Ohio, where a Democrat was making a strong run in a solidly Republican district.

State Attorney General William "Bill" Schuette, Gretchen Whitmer and Bill Gelineau won their respective primaries August 7 to compete against each other for the governor seat November 6. That is almost 28 percent higher than the 1.7 million who turned out in 2002, which is believed to be the previous MI midterm primary record. Turnout numbers posted online only go back 40 years.

In choosing Whitmer, Michigan voters opted for a known quantity; a former state legislator, she was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2000. "She doesn't want to be in a situation where she's going to be challenged". "Money does win elections", she said. And yet our leaders have failed us, and that's exactly what this campaign is all about: taking care of the families of this state. "When you've got a Legislature that's so male, all the leaders making decisions around our health care being white males. you get the policies that we have here in MI. They told me that a message of health care, education and housing stability wouldn't be welcome here".

In other races that will be closely watched this fall, Democrats nominated former national security official Elissa Slotkin and former state Rep. Gretchen Driskell for Republican-held House seats in southeastern MI. Said differently, every candidate has the responsibility to the voters to make public just what any and all major policy expenditures are expected to cost and how they will be paid for.

She said even Republican-leaning women in Oakland County north of Detroit are volunteering for her campaign.

Their victories, reported by The Associated Press, set up deep ideological clashes in state's most prominent general election races in November. He declined to name her.
