Ben Stokes trial: soldier grabbed metal bar after knockout punch

BEN STOKES CCTV of the England cricketer was shown to the court

The CCTV footage shows Mr Hales behind Mr Stokes and the cricketer approaching a retreating Mr Ali, jurors were told.

"The individual seemed to be the main aggressor or was progressing forward trying to get to another individual", Mr. Spure told the court.

On Monday's opening day of the trial, jurors saw footage of Stokes, 27, brawling with 27-year-old Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, 28, outside Mbargo in the early hours of September 25 last year.

They are jointly charged in connection with an incident in the Clifton Triangle area of Bristol on September 25 previous year - several hours after England had played a one-day global against the West Indies in the city.

"These men were speaking to the gay guys in what I would call a harsh and abusive way", the statement said. He mentioned my gold teeth and he said I looked like [expletive] and I replied, "Thank you very much". All three men deny the charges.

"I decided at this point matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene to stop Ryan Ali", Stokes told police.

"I believe I felt threatened", he said.

Stokes' police interview at the time lasted 21 minutes, and involved two handwritten statements.

"I felt the need to defend myself".

Mr Spure described seeing Stokes punch Ali, who was trying to get away, with a "clenched fist" in the road. "I got a little frightened so closed the window and went back to bed".

"I made a decision to intervene and asked Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale to stop abusing Kai and William".

He identified Stokes to attending police officers, who arrested him.

Prosecutors allege that trouble flared after Stokes and Hales caught up with Ali, Hale, O'Connor and Barry on a nearby street.

The player allegedly made "fun" of two men for their "camp behaviour" and impersonated their hand movements, before flicking the butt of his cigarette at them, the jury heard.

Bristol Crown Court has heard that Stokes allegedly mocked the two gay men, Kai Barry and William O'Connor, as he argued with doorman Andrew Cunningham over re-entry into the club.

The cricketer is missing England's upcoming second Test match with India at Lord's due to the trial at Bristol Crown Court. He was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary by ambulance and diagnosed as having suffered a fracture to the medial orbital wall on the left side of his face.
