And it's still burning. It killed two people, including a firefighter, and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings before being fully contained on January 12.

The blaze is now larger than NY city and is approaching the size of Los Angeles.

Several areas impacted by the Mendocino Complex Fire are seeing evacuations being lifted.

In this file photo taken on August 04, 2018 Resident Lane Lawder carries a water bucket while fighting to save his home from the Ranch Fire burning down New Long Valley Rd near Clearlake Oaks, California.

What's more, over the same period, the state has experienced eight of its 10 most destructive fires in history.

Both Sierra National Forest and Stanislaus National Forest are affected now too.

Since 2000, California has seen seven of its top 10 largest-ever recorded fires.

The Mendocino Complex, which is comprised of two massive fires whose edges are as close as three miles apart, is not almost finished.

A new fire erupted Monday in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, and prompted the evacuation of two canyons and some campgrounds as it expanded into the Cleveland National Forest. Look how fast this Mendocino Complex went up in ranking. It has scorched more than 290,000 acres, fire officials said Tuesday. The number of structures threatened by the fire has decreased, as well, from over 15,000 on Sunday to 9,300 Monday morning.

Three of the largest wildfires in California's history have occurred in the past 12 months.

How many homes have been destroyed by the Mendocino Complex Fire?

The Ranch Fire, which has burned over 225,000 acres, sit at only 21 percent contained. Seventy five residences have been destroyed.

The 14th Engineer Battalion soldiers were chosen for their engineering expertise and are likely to aid civilian firefighters in operations including digging trenches and building fire breaks, officials said.

There have been no fatalities reported as a result of the Mendocino Complex Fire so far.

The Ferguson Fire started on July 13.

The Carr Fire has been blamed for seven deaths, including a 21-year-old Pacific Gas and Electric Company lineman Jay Ayeta, whom the company said on Sunday was killed in a vehicle crash as he worked with crews in risky terrain. "In years past, there were one or two big fires a year". Blazing temperatures during the day have exacerbated the wildfire.

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling the wildfires across California. That can range from anything from a spark from a vehicle that catches fire in dry brush nearby, to, in extreme cases, arson. While forest thinning and prescribed burns can help reduce fire risk, they are labor-intensive and must be done regularly. Of the 94,331 acres burned, firefighters have contained 39%, according to authorities. And these firefighters are are working through the night to stop the blaze.

Aircraft are dropping retardant across ridgelines to keep fire from racing down hillsides toward residential communities.

The work is also a change of pace from wildland firefighting here in Arizona. Today, though, the president issued a tweet that demonstrated shocking ignorance about California's fires. The Thomas Fire from 2017 is the largest, having burned 281,893 acres.
