Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says making Jose Mourinho smile 'doesn't happen often'

The two managers generally get on well. AFP

The Reds have splashed the cash throughout July with marquee deals for Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.

"One of my biggest goals in life is to make Jose smile - it doesn't happen very often", he said.

"I think a big part of being at the top is to play football that our people like".

"It's a free world and I have no problem with Jose", said the German.

"The other goalkeepers are really good, like all our other players, but that doesn't mean we don't bring in another one".

"We know it doesn't mean you win [trophies] automatically", he told reporters at their pre-season base in the US.

"If there's competition in training then the training is intense, and then you have the pressure of a weekend that if you don't put in good performances then your place is maybe up for grabs".

"Ramos said a lot of things afterwards that I didn't like".

In the build-up to the match against Liverpool, Mourinho took aim at the club's £176million summer spent, and he had another little dig shortly before kick-off.

As you'd expect, Jose Mourinho has been on the defensive all summer, pointing out how the World Cup has robbed him of a big slice of his first team, who are still on holiday following the tournament in Russian Federation. "Depends on the football we play".

However, Klopp dismissed those suggestions ahead of the two sides' meeting in MI on Saturday in the International Champions Cup.

Klopp seems to be yearning for a time when instant messages did not exist and if people wanted to communicate with you, they had to find you first.

"That's the situation. We're ambitious, we've never said something different".

"I could not imagine that the world would change like that - two and a half years ago, £100 million was insane money, since then the world obviously changed since then".

Manchester United v Liverpool is the kind of game that will always attract plenty of attention, even in pre-season. "So we're really looking forward to it".
