PM Narendra Modi to gift 200 cows to Rwanda

Finally, he will visit South Africa from tomorrow to Thursday to attend the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit.

Currently, India doesn't have a resident mission in Rwanda, but is administered through the high commission in Kampala. The embassy in Uganda also covers Rwanda.

Speaking ahead of the visit, ministry of external affairs secretary (economic relations) T.S. Tirumurti noted that India views "Rwanda as an extremely important partner in Africa because apart from being the Chair of African Union right now but they have also been, in many ways, gateway to Eastern Africa". "44 members of the African Union signed the Agreement".

He added that India was eager to learn from Rwanda on best practices in rural development and agriculture where the country has made some headways. "When ratified, the Agreement would be the largest Free Trade Area in terms of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organization".

"With India we signed a loan of $100 million for irrigation in three separate areas in the country and $100 million for developing special economic zones", Rwanda's minister of finance Uzziel Ndagijimana told Reuters.

In another first, Modi will gift 200 locally-sourced cows to buttress Rwandan President Paul Kagame's Girinka scheme, under which poor families are gifted dairy cows by the government, and the first female calf born of the cow is in turn gifted to a neighbor, thereby not just boosting agricultural production and better nutrition, but also promoting brotherhood and solidarity in the community.

Officials from the two countries also signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining cooperation in agriculture and animal resources cooperation and cooperation in leather and allied industries.

India also extended United States dollars 200 million lines of credit to Rwanda.

Two of the units are a donation of the Government of India, while the third by the Madhusudan Agrawal foundation, according to Uganda's Honorary Consul to Mumbai, Agrawal Madhusudan. On his first visit to Uganda, PM Modi will address its Parliament on Wednesday.

On the second leg, Mr Modi will visit Uganda which will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over 20 years. This is addition to the credit line of $400 million extended earlier.

In the education sector, Modi announced a donation of 100,000 NCERT books for school going children of Uganda. There is a special outreach session for BRICS leaders with their African counterparts from Togo, Zambia, Namibia, Senegal, Gabon, Ethiopia, Angola, Uganda and Rwanda.
