US intel chief in tight spot over Trump and Russia meddling

Sarah Sanders attempted to clean up Trump’s week of Russia controversies. She only made it worse

Ahead of a cabinet meeting Wednesday, he seemed to have answered in the negative - "No" - to a question if he believed Russian Federation was still targeting the United States. "Look at what we've done".

CNBC interviewer Michelle Caruso-Cabrera asked Bannon about all the indications that President Donald Trump likes President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation.

Rebuked as never before by his own party, including a stern pushback from usually reserved Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the United States president sought to end 27 hours of recrimination by delivering a rare admission of error.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that Russian Federation does not pose a threat to the USA, directly contradicting his director of national intelligence's statements.

That forced a tortured clarification of his remarks for the second day in a row.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the president actually was saying "no" to the prospect of answering more questions, not responding to the specific question.

EARLIER: DONALD Trump fired off a series of wild tweets in a desperate attempt to defend himself from fierce criticism by the media and members of his own party over his behaviour with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

"It's going to bring our manufacturing base back", he said. In addition, the two leaders have also held several telephone conversations.

"The overall assertions that have come out of the Russian government are absolutely absurd: the fact that they want to question 11 American citizens and the assertions that the Russian government is making about those American citizens", spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters.

Senate Committee on Foreign Relations chairman Bob Corker, a Republican, called the Helsinki news conference "saddening and disappointing".

"We're making bold reforms to try to fix this and make sure it never happens again because we take it seriously and because we recognize that our election system [is] incredibly important and is certainly a cornerstone of our democracy", she added.

Senator Bob Corker, a Republican who chairs the committee, said he understands the request and was "looking into precedent" to see if it was viable.

The White House is highly likely to swat away the request and invoke executive privilege, arguing that no president is required to reveal private conversations and that an aide, such as a translator, should not be compelled to do so either.

"I was interpreting what the president's intention was, and stating the administration's policy. Many positive things will come out of that meeting".

The Trump administration, she said, was trying a new approach on its relationship with Russian Federation.

She added that it's "our goal" to stop any foreign meddling and that Trump made clear during his meeting with Putin to "stay out of U.S. elections".

I think it was a strong news conference.
