Donald Trump invites Vladimir Putin to U.S. despite uproar after Helsinki meeting

Ukraine

Mr Putin and Mr Trump sat down for their first summit in Helsinki on Monday, an event that sparked a storm of criticism in the United States after Mr Trump refused to blame the Russian leader for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, something Mr Putin denies.

Huntsman attended a larger meeting of the US and Russian delegations but has not spoken publicly about his role or what was talked about.

On Wednesday, Trump appeared to tell a reporter that "no", the U.S.is not facing any current attacks from Russian Federation, despite widespread knowledge to the contrary from his Justice Department and intelligence community.

"We will see how things develop further", Putin said, evoking those in the USA trying to prevent any improvement in relations and "putting narrow party interests above the national interest". He just said it's not Russian Federation.

Putin's comments come as Trump still faces condemnation on both sides of the political aisle after his fawning press conference in Helsinki with the Russian leader.

One way to invite him would be to say, you dare touch our elections, and this summit is canceled publicly. While answering questions from reporters, he stopped far short of condemning Russia's meddling in the 2016 United States election and appeared to hold reservations against United States intelligence reports.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and five other senators urged Trump in a letter to send Huntsman, Defense Secretary James Mattis and a top intelligence community leader to explain to lawmakers how they will continue to advance American interests after the Helsinki summit. "But no one expected that", Putin said.

On Thursday, Trump offered fresh remarks, claiming to CNBC he has been "far tougher on Russian Federation than any president in many, many years" and warning that he would be Putin's "worst enemy" if their diplomatic engagement does not work out.

Putin had both good and bad things to say about Trump in a broad speech about foreign policy.

But Mr. Trump has continued to insist that the US should try to have a good relationship with Russian Federation.

The Russian leader praised Mr Trump's mediation efforts in North Korea, but slammed his decision to pull out of the worldwide accord curbing Iran's nuclear activities.

Mr. Coats also told the conference that he did not know what was discussed during the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki, at which only their interpreters were also present. The Russian Defence Ministry has said it is ready to implement what it called agreements on increased co-operation with the USA military in Syria.

Roland Murof, a spokesman for the Estonian military, said the instances of Russian planes intruding North Atlantic Treaty Organisation airspace "go up when something political is going on".

Kosachev also said if the summit turns out to be a failure, it won't be the fault of Putin or Trump.

"What could possibly cause President Trump to put the interests of Russian Federation over those of the United States? No big decisions are made without Putin and all of that was laid out".
