Tour de France - John Degenkolb dedicates emotional victory to friend

John Degenkolb won a dramatic ninth stage of the Tour de France which saw Chris Froome and Richie Porte among the riders to crash during a chaotic race across the cobbles of northern France.

The BMC Racing rider, who also crashed out of the Tour previous year, was one of the main contenders to finish on the podium in Paris.

Greg Van Avermaet, the Rio Olympic road race champion, went into Wednesday with the yellow jersey and a 2:22 lead, which he had tripled on the first mountain day Tuesday.

The Tour is, however, over for Porte, who was taken to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury after hitting the asphalt 10 kilometres into the stage - the second time in a row that the BMC rider crashed out of the race. "I'm not afraid. I want to be in a good position, and I trust my team".

"I love Roubaix", said Degenkolb, who was one of six riders badly injured when knocked down by a British tourist.

Despite his tour upset, Porte said he has his eye on future competitions.

With the notable exception of 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali, an "artist" on the bike as his former sports director Philippe Mauduit calls him, the overall favourites may find these hard sections like a race within a race.

It was the second career victory at the Tour for Groenewegen. That increased his lead over Froome's teammate Geraint Thomas in second to 7 seconds and his own BMC teammate Tejay Van Garderen to 9 seconds.

"It's a miracle I made it back, it's a miracle I'm still in the Tour de France", a dust covered Bardet said at the finishing line.

Tom Dumoulin, meanwhile, suffered a puncture.

While Porte headed for hospital, their likely Plan B Tejay Van Garderen - who started the day just nine seconds off yellow - got himself caught up in crashes and conceded more nearly six minutes to effectively rule himself out of contention.

There was talk before and during this year's Tour that Thomas could challenge Froome as Sky's team leader, even though Froome has won the last three Grand Tours. Lampaert finished the stage in third and fellow Belgian Philippe Gilbert, who finished the stage fourth, jumped into the top three overall.

"I've had bad luck, but I always had the will to come back to my best".

Degenkolb's victory came at the end of a crash strewn stage, which lived up to expectations of being a key one for general classification contenders.

"I'm feeling good and optimistic about the upcoming stages", the four-time champion said on Monday, the Tour's first rest day.
