At historic summit, Trump refuses to confront Putin on vote row

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have met and shaken hands at Finland's Presidential Palace for a much-anticipated summit

U.S. President Donald Trump is setting low expectations for his Monday's summit in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said he has "low expectations" of the summit and "maybe some good will come of it".

His Monday meeting with Putin is set to be the first Russian-U.S. presidential summit since 2010.

Any Trump request for Russia to extradite hacking suspects is likely to fall on deaf ears, however, as the Kremlin, citing the Russian constitution, has a policy of not handing over suspects wanted by other countries.

The Russian and US presidents are meeting in Helsinki days after Trump attended the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where he pushed its 28 member states to increase defense spending.

In a pre-summit interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation" program aired on Sunday, Trump lumped in the European Union with China and Russian Federation as USA economic adversaries. I believe that having a meeting with Chairman Kim [Jong Un of North Korea] was a good thing.

When Trump meets Putin, he will sit down with a disciplined, detail-oriented and experienced Russian leader who has been on the world stage for more than 18 years, in contrast to 18 months in office for Trump.

The president opened his first meeting with Putin - it lasted more than two hours last July in Hamburg, Germany - by pressing Putin on Russian election meddling and Putin denied being involved, according to USA officials who described the meeting afterward.

A probe over allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election has clouded Trump's presidency.

He nevertheless praised the Russian President for organising a "truly great World Cup tournament, one of the best ever!". Rosenstein said that he had informed Trump about the charges earlier this week. "They had bad defences and they were able to be hacked".

"A better relationship with the Russian government would benefit all, but the ball is in Russia's court", the top U.S. official wrote on Twitter, adding that he has already arrived in the Finnish capital.

Finland has also been the site of previous US-Russia summits.

Asked about the indictment during his visit to the United Kingdom, Trump told reporters that he would "absolutely bring up" the meddling issue at the meeting with Putin.

"Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union but they're a foe".

Donald Trump has rattled allies once more by labelling the European Union a "foe". "The Republican National Committee. I think it's ridiculous".

But US allies and many in Washington are anxious about what Trump might conceivably bargain away to Putin.

The meeting came in the midst of tensions between Russian Federation and the West in issues concerning Iran, Syria and Crimea, as well as the unprecedented alienation between the USA and its trans-Atlantic allies over trade and defense. The collective blood pressure between the United States and Russian Federation is off the charts high.

"That is what the American side proposed and we are polite people, so we have agreed", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a recent interview for Larry King's "Politicking", which airs on the Russia-backed RT network. Trump said such sessions are beneficial.

Trump said he ran a clean campaign and beat Hillary Clinton soundly in 2016. "They want to do well and we want to do well".
