Preparing to meet Putin, Trump calls the European Union a 'foe'

President Donald Trump says "nothing bad. maybe some good" will come out of his summit Monday with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Finland.

"I think we have a lot of foes", the USA leader told CBS News in an interview broadcast Sunday that was taped the day before at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland.

"I think we have a lot of foes", Trump said, responding to a question put forward by by CBS News' Jeff Glor. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe", the president said.

Members of the European Union have historically been some of the United States's oldest allies.

Trump's comments double down on his criticism of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member countries at last week's summit. He also criticized America's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners for not upping their military spending faster than they had already agreed to, only to later up the ante and tell them they would need to spend more of their GDP on defense - four percent - than even the USA does.

A probe over allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election has clouded Trump's presidency.

He continued: "Russia is a foe in certain respects".

In a pre-summit interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation" program aired on Sunday, Trump lumped in the European Union with China and Russian Federation as USA economic adversaries. But simply because he considers these actors to be a "foe" does not necessarily mean that they are bad, he clarified. It doesn't mean anything. It means that they are competitors.

"The E.U.is very hard", Trump began.

The president then iterated that "the European Union is very difficult" situation but that he loves "those countries and respects "the leaders of those countries. They want to do well and we want to do well".

US President Donald Trump has offered both candid praise and unabashed criticism of Germany and its policies. "You're supposed to be fighting for someone and then that someone gives billions of dollars to the one that you're, you know, guarding against". "I want to tell you".

"Tell us where you're going to extradite those folks", said Representative Trey Gowdy, who chaired a raucous House investigative hearing on Thursday that highlighted bitter, partisan divisions within the US Congress over a probe of Russian election meddling that has clouded Trump's presidency. "Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news", Mr Tusk said on Twitter.
