Novak Djokovic breaks Kei Nishikori's resistance to reach Wimbledon semis

Novak Djokovic speaks out on narrowly escaping Wimbledon scheduling nightmare

Novak Djokovic returned to a grand slam semi-final for the first time since 2016 after recording a hard-fought win over Kei Nishikori at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic ended his near two-year absence from grand slam semi-finals by booking a place in the last four at Wimbledon.

It will be the Serbian's first appearance in the last four at a grand slam since finishing as runner-up at the US Open in 2016.

The former world number one lost his serve in the seventh game, too, but Khachanov simply could not take advantage and Djokovic made no mistake by claiming his first set point when it arrived.

"I think the first warning was unnecessary", said Djokovic, who was sanctioned in the second set for spearing his racquet into the court. "The expectations he's had to deal with for over a decade, 15 years, I mean, at the top of the game, he's able to deal with it so well, which isn't easy".

When asked what he admired about defending champion Federer, the 32-year-old Anderson was happy to reel off an exhaustive check-list.

As Djokovic battled to find a way to victory, there then came a key moment.

He will next face either two-time champion Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro.

"I'm not sure what to say right now", U.S. Open finalist Anderson said. "Luckily for me it didn't happen", Djokovic said after he romped to a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win to reach the last eight for a 10th time.

Those fears dimmed when Nishikori broke Nole in the opening game of the fourth set, but again the balance tipped in the Serb's direction when he broke back in the follower. "I'm frustrated to lose today, but these two weeks have helped me going forward".

Having already been critical of what he described as unfair treatment from the Wimbledon crowd during his clash with Kyle Edmund, Djokovic was less than impressed with the umpires decision.

"Maybe he has good chance to win the tournament", said Nishikori, who was beaten in four sets by the Serb in the quarter-finals.

"It motivates me to do extremely well here because I don't want to sit here and explain my loss".

For the only the second time at Wimbledon, Federer was beaten after holding a two-set lead, with his previous loss from that position coming against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 2011 quarterfinals. "It didn't harm the grass". "From the second, it got better and I just tried to stay calm and fight every game".

"I think it's not fair, but it is the way it is in the midst of the emotions of a match".
