Trump releases 'very nice' letter from Kim Jong Un

Kim gave the directive after his historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore last month, said Choi Sung-yong, head of a group representing families of South Koreans abducted by North Korea, citing an informed source in the North's capital.

Media reports following US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang last week painted a dire picture of denuclearization talks, seizing on a statement released by North Korea's Foreign Ministry decrying the Trump administration's "gangster-like" approach. "President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

In it, Kim describes his landmark June 12 summit with Trump in Singapore as the "start of a meaningful journey" and expresses confidence that the "sincere efforts" of both sides "will surely come to fruition".

The North Koreans failed to show up to a scheduled meeting Thursday during which they were slated to discuss the repatriation of American soldiers' remains with United States officials.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of U.S. soldiers who died in the war.

The UNC told the US defense ministry about North Korea's proposal and is waiting for Washington's answer, the source added.

In the letter dated July 6, Kim thanked Trump for his "energetic and extraordinary efforts" to improve the once hostile relations between the two countries.

But readers soon pointed out that the letter didn't actually mention any action that had been taken, and only made vague promises about 'the future progress of taking practical actions'.

Pompeo had said a Pentagon team would meet with the North's officials on or around Thursday at the inter-Korea border to discuss the repatriation.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved", he said.

"We got back our great fallen heroes, the remains sent back today, already 200 got sent back", Trump said at a Minnesota rally last month. The meeting was about returning the remains of American soldiers from the Korean War.

Mr Trump announced last month that North Korea has returned the remains of 200 USA troops, but there was no official confirmation of the move from military authorities.
