Thai official: 4 boys brought out of cave Monday

Elon Musk shows off 'kid-sized submarine' he thinks can help in Thai cave rescue

An aide to the Thai Navy SEAL commander said four boys were brought out of the flooded cave on Monday and the ongoing rescue operation is over for the day.

A vehicle loaded with oxygen tanks is seen near the Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Four boys among 12 who were stuck in the flooded cave in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Rai were rescued on Monday, the Thai Navy SEAL said in a Facebook post. "They are now at the field hospital near the cave", Tossathep Boonthong, chief of the health department in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, told Reuters. Expert divers Sunday rescued four of 12 boys from a flooded cave in northern Thailand, as a risky and complicated operation unfolded amid heavy rain and the threat of rising water underground.

Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said all four boys rescued Monday are "safe and conscious" and in a hospital.

The search and rescue operation has riveted people both in Thailand and internationally, with journalists from across the globe traveling to this town along the border with Myanmar to report on the ordeal.

Hundreds of spectators and journalists have gathered in the area around the cave, hoping for news that the boys and their coach would emerge safely.

Musk said: "Continue to be amazed by the bravery, resilience and tenacity of kids and diving team in Thailand".

The rescue mission has been a huge operation, led by the Royal Thai Navy's SEAL unit, and supported by a cast of hundreds. Four boys and their football coach are still trapped inside the cave. Light enough to be carried by two divers, small enough to get through narrow gaps.

The final four boys and the coach are en route to join the rest of the team in hospital, where they are being treated in isolation.

Rescue mission chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said it had resumed, with divers re-entering the cave at 11am local time (4pm NZT).

Following the successful evacuation on Sunday, rescue personnel assessed their performance and adjusted the plan for Monday, resulting in "a smooth, coordinated operation", deputy commander of the Third Army Maj Gen Chalongchai Chaiyakham told reporters. On Monday, four more were rushed to a hospital.

"I'm hoping for good news today", he said.

Two divers have been escorting each child, following a cave line that stretches a mile and a half.

But rescuing the remaining five people, which includes the boys' 25-year-old soccer coach, could take more than one operation, Narongsak said.

Narongsak said that experts told him new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to just 108 square feet.

Pad Krapao is a basil rice meal with stir-fried pork or chicken, topped with a fried egg.

The cave complex is off-limits during the rainy season, which usually runs from May to October, when downpours can quickly flood it.

"No hugging" or "touching" would be allowed between the boys and their relatives, however, until all medical tests are completed, the official said.
