South Syrian rebels agree surrender deal, Assad takes crossing

A Su-25 fighter jet which took part in the Russian mission in Syria lands at a military airport in Krasnodar Region Russia

Hundreds of troops in a large military convoy with Russian and Syrian flags advanced on Syria's Nassib border crossing with Jordan, witnesses said.

Upon reaching the Nasib border crossing between Syria and Jordan, the rebels' red-white-black flag with three red stars in the middle used to seen painted on every roadblock and nearly all walls.

The Syrian media reported that the agreement was reached in the Bosra al-Cham city in southern Syria.

The regime assault on rebel-held areas in Daraa since June 19 had killed more than 160 civilians, the Observatory says.

Footage posted on social media of women and children pleading with King Abdullah to let them in has generated a wave of sympathy in Jordan with the plight of the newly displaced Syrians.

"Once again, Russian Federation is justifying a military offensive by the Assad regime by saying that more than half the de-escalation zone is controlled by terrorists".

The U.N. refugee agency has urged Jordan to open its borders to the fleeing Syrians.

Syrian government forces recaptured a vital border crossing with Jordan on Friday and raised the national flag for the first time in years, restoring sovereignty over a key region and potentially reopening a gateway for Syrian exports to Arab countries.

Jordan has played a leading role in persuading Free Syrian Army rebels to reach a deal with Russian Federation.

By Sunday afternoon, regime forces had taken control of the village, he and Syria's state news agency SANA said.

While the offensive has targeted parts of neighbouring Quneitra and Sweida provinces, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deal only concerned Daraa province.

Russian officials and Syrian rebel groups agreed on the truce in the province of Daraa, south of Damascus.

The Nasib crossing, in the southeastern countryside of Daraa, fell to the rebels in 2015 and returned under the army control on Friday following a two-week-long military campaign in Daraa.

"Cars carrying Russian military police and representatives of the Syrian government's border administration entered the Naseeb crossing without a fight", observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Another displaced Syrian, Umm Zaid, a mother of five who had lost her husband in the latest offensive, said she would break through the fence if necessary, speaking to Reuters from the border area by phone.

Daraa lies in a wider southern region that Assad aims to retake, including the neighbouring province of Quneitra to the west, which borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

He added that the Jordanians are working on resuming the talks between rebels and the Russians in southwestern Syria.

For the anti-Assad rebels, losing the southwest will reduce their territory to a region of the northwest bordering Turkey and a patch of desert in the east where USA forces are stationed near the border with Iraq and Jordan.
