As Trump weighs options, Pence meets with court contenders

Donald Trump Interviews Indian American Amul Thapar For US Supreme Court

Any GOP defections could begin to doom a nominee.

The president is choosing from a list of 25 candidates vetted by conservative groups.

In contrast to the admittedly narrow criticisms of Kethledge and Kavanaugh, Christian conservatives are nearly uniformly backing Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a U.S. Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. "I'll give you the answer".

However, Collins claimed that if a candidate was under qualified for the job, she would not exclusively support the candidate based off their support of that ruling.

"Past Republican presidents have repeatedly nominated justices who failed to live up to the principles they were selected to represent", Cruz writes. Mike Lee (R-Utah). Sen.

Kavanaugh, after serving in the Bush White House, joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2006 after Democrats held up his nomination process for three years.

Kavanaugh serves on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

While at Bedminster, Trump will have dinner Friday with Vice President Mike Pence. The senator's office confirmed that he spoke with President Trump on Monday - and while the White House made reference to the call, further details weren't disclosed by the administration.

The senator has a few times threatened to withhold his vote on key Trump priorities citing ideological disagreements, most recently the nomination of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"[So] I'm going to do something, but I don't think I'll be so specific", Trump added.

He's a connected Washington insider with roots in politics in the George W. Bush White House.

Kavanaugh has about as long and high-profile a record in Republican legal circles as anyone on this list. Some also raised concern about his approach to the Affordable Care Act.

Former US Senator Jim DeMint (R) of SC said of Lee, "He has exactly the brilliance, the background and temperament that President Trump should be looking for".

President Trump will announce his next Supreme Court nominee in less than a week, and one name popping up on everybody's short list is Amy Coney Barrett. All in all, Kethledge appears to be the same kind of conventional conservative that the other people on the President's list. McConnell has effectively 50 votes, a bare majority, not the 52 he had in the beginning of the Trump presidency.

There have also been lobbying efforts around other candidates.

The Judicial Action Group wrote a report on both judges, and found that Kavanaugh's dissent to be lukewarm in a case involving a pregnant undocumented immigrant teen who sought an abortion on US soil. He was appointed to the 6th Circuit in MI in 2008 by President George W. Bush. Spence Abraham, who hired Kethledge as a young staffer in the 1990s.

Judge Barrett also clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and taught at the University of Notre Dame School of Law.

Barrett was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

CSPAN Raymond Kethledge at his Senate confirmation hearing in 2008.

Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, often a swing vote among the nine justices, has the potential to remake the high court for a generation.

On CNN's "State of the Union", Maine's senior senator said she would support nominees who consider Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that overturned laws criminalizing or restricting access to abortion, a settled matter.

"Indeed, numerous worst liberal judicial activists, including William Brennan, John Paul Stevens, and Harry Blackmun - the author of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide - were appointed by Republican presidents".
