Woman, 92, refuses assisted living facility, shoots and kills son

Maricopa County Sheriff Anna Mae Blessing

A 92-YEAR-OLD WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her 72-year-old son over his plans to put her in a nursing home, U.S. police have said.

After an argument, Blessing fired several rounds at her son and killed him, authorities said.

Upon being disarmed, Blessing sat down on a recliner to wait for the police.

Ms Blessing also told detectives that she should be "put to sleep" for her actions and had meant to kill herself following the incident. When deputies arrived, they ordered Blessing to come outside but were met with silence.

The suspect then tried to shoot his girlfriend, but she charged Blessing and managed to wrestle the pistols from her. Blessing lived with her son and his girlfriend for about six months before the freakish incident took place at their resident.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Anna Mae Blessing in Fountain Hills, Arizona, on Monday. On July 2, she grabbed two pistols, put them in her robe pockets and walked into her son's bedroom. Blessing had been living with her son and his girlfriend for about four months, police said. One had been given to the suspect by her husband before he died, and she had allegedly bought the other pistol herself.

Police say the woman shot her son twice before turning the gun on his 57-year-old girlfriend, who escaped the incident uninjured.

Blessing has been charged with a count of murder in the first degree, a count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a count of kidnapping.

The sheriff's office said they are investigating the case as a domestic violence homicide. 'They are often isolated and neither predictable nor preventable'. She moved to Black Canyon City, Arizona, in 2017 and then to Fountain Hills earlier this year. She also said she should be "put to sleep" for her actions.

Blessing is still in jail, held on a $500,000 cash bond.
