Mexico's president-elect ditches security guards: 'The people will protect me'

Reports Show Lopez Obrador With Landlside Win in Mexico Election

Third time proved a charm for the left-wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador who has claimed victory in Mexico's presidential election.

Lopez Obrador, who won by a landslide on the weekend, did not provide specifics on what an "understanding" with the Trump administration might look like during an interview with Televisa news network but emphasised the need for mutual respect and cooperation. Newspaper El Financiero's exit poll gave him 49 percent of the vote to 27 percent for conservative Ricardo Anaya and 18 percent for ruling-party candidate Jose Antonio Meade.

Lopez Obrador won't be sworn-in until December 1, when incumbent President Enrique Peña Nieto, from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, leaves office.

Corbyn repeated Lopez Obrador's recurring words "yes we can" and assured that change is possible both in Mexico and in United Kingdom, where the left is still the opposition.

"For the good of Mexico, I wish him the greatest success", Meade said minutes earlier. You shall not be disappointed", he vowed while crowds waved flags of his Morena party and chanted "President!

Some 89 million people are eligible to vote in Sunday's elections, and millennials and the so-called Generation Z are expected to play a key role in defining the country's future.

Partial vote counts also showed probable gubernatorial wins for allies of Lopez Obrador's Morena party in at least four of eight state races on the ballot plus for the head of government in Mexico City.

Public anger over corruption scandals, which have shattered the PRI's credibility, was a defining feature of the campaign, alongside nationwide discontent over soaring levels of violence and years of lackluster economic growth.

The coalition was set to win governorships in the states of Veracruz, Morelos, Chiapas and Tabasco, as well as Mexico City, where a woman was elected for the first time ever, the Jewish scientist and environmentalist Claudia Sheinbaum.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told CNBC that Mexico "needs some sort of an arrangement" given its dependence on American consumers and businesses, having shipped $314 billion in goods to the United States past year.

The violence isn't limited to politicians, either. The United States has a midterm election beforehand, too, which could completely change the political calculation to get a revised trade deal through Congress.

An activist of the Labour Party was shot dead on leaving her home in Contepec in western Michoacan state, the party was quoted as saying.

Mexico's new president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador went to one of his most important meetings yet Tuesday by cruising through city traffic in a compact auto with the windows down and no visible security detail, establishing a casual new style of leadership that has some expressing concerns for his safety in violence-wracked Mexico.

Lopez Obrador called Sunday for "better relations" with the United States.

"We are never going to disrespect the USA government, because we want them to respect us", Lopez Obrador said". Much of the popular ire has been aimed at unpopular President Enrique Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, whose market-oriented economic reforms have yet to benefit many Mexicans.

"We really aren't thinking about changing the Constitution or major laws", Urzua told Reuters news agency on Monday, insisting that his team's changes at PEMEX would mainly focus on cost-cutting.

Relations between Trump and Lopez Obrador will be closely watched because Trump has regularly criticized Mexico.
