Overflow crowd gathers to honour slain Maryland journalist

Official Suspect was found hiding under desk

Hundreds of people gathered on Friday evening to remember the five people gunned down at a community newspaper office in Annapolis, Maryland, one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in USA history.

The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos, reportedly had a long-running feud with the paper, law enforcement sources told the Baltimore Sun, which owns the Capital Gazette.

Steve Schuh, county executive of Anne Arundel County, holds a copy of The Capital Gazette near the scene of a shooting at the newspaper's office, Friday, June 29, 2018, in Annapolis, Md. Also slain were Gerald Fischman, editorial page editor; features reporter Wendi Winters; reporter John McNamara, and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.

The Capital Gazette said on Twitter the accused was a local man who had filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper and a columnist in 2012. He says Ramos barricaded the exit door so employees couldn't escape, and that one of the five people who were killed was shot while trying to escape out that exit.

Ramos later sued the newspaper, a reporter, a judge and a woman who testified against him, but the case was thrown out. He said police believe they were sent before the attack, and detectives are now investigating.

President Donald Trump has offered a statement of support for journalists after a gunman fatally shot five people at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

Speaking to NBC's Today show in an interview aired on Monday, the woman said relentless abuse forced her to move out of Maryland, where the suspect is now charged with five counts of murder.

The newspaper is part of Capital Gazette Communications, which also publishes the Maryland Gazette and CapitalGazette.com.

Prosecutor Wes Adams said during Friday's news conference: "We brought to the judge's attention the evidence that suggested a coordinated attack".

The online records do not list an attorney for Ramos, who is scheduled for a bail hearing 10:30 a.m. Friday in Annapolis.

Keith Cyphers, who works in an office across the hall from the Capital Gazette, told "Good Morning America" he heard an "incredibly loud noise... I write about this stuff - not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death - all the time", he said.

'At this point in time, it would start to polarize people, ' he said. Altomare said evidence found at the suspect's home showed he had planned the attack, and that the pump-action 12-gauge shotgun used by the shooter was legally purchased.

Threats of violence were made over social media to the newspaper, some as recently as Thursday, he said. Among the names listed below it is the Baltimore Sun Media Group's editor-in-chief and publisher, Trif Alatzas.

"He said something along the lines of he was anxious about me, that I hadn't responded to him in three or four days, what was wrong with me, why was I doing this to him?"
