Supreme Court Upholds Trump's Travel Ban

Supreme Court upholds travel ban in major win for Trump

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the Trump White House's travel ban, ruling that the US President has the authority to ban travellers from certain countries if he thinks that it is necessary to protect the country.

In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts argued that Trump's stated animus toward Muslims does not affect his power to determine immigration policy.

Even as it upheld the ban, chief justice John Robert's majority opinion included a mini-lecture on the importance of protection from religious-based discrimination in U.S. history.

The ban stops refugees and immigrants from coming into the USA, for an extended period of time, from five Muslim-majority countries: Libya, Iran, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen.

It already has. Since the original restriction was announced last September, the government removed Chad from the list, concluding that its system for evaluating visa applicants had improved enough to meet US standards. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump's travel ban was constitutional.

Trump also linked the travel ban with his hard-line stance on southern border crossings, making clear that immigration would be a central campaign issue as he stumps for Republicans in the midterms.

Trump has reacted to the ruling.

The apex court rejected arguments that the ban was prompted by discrimination against Muslims. Within a week of taking office, the first travel ban was announced.

Mrs Sotomajor said her conservative colleagues arrived at the opposite result by "ignoring the facts, misconstruing our legal precedent, and turning a blind eye to the pain and suffering the Proclamation inflicts upon countless families and individuals, many of whom are United States citizens".

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing the dissent, said they show that the travel ban was motivated by animosity toward a disfavored group. "United States", the infamous 1944 Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the USA government's internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. The ban also halts immigrants and refugees from North Korea and Venezuela.

Trump's original travel ban - whose official title was Executive Order 13769 - sparked chaos across U.S. airports after its implementation last February.

The Court ruled that the law violated the free speech rights of Christian facilities. It means that the current ban can remain in effect and that Mr Trump could potentially add more countries.
