Muharrem İnce concedes defeat to Erdoğan in Turkey elections

GETTYFans out in support of President Erdogan

Supporters of Turkey's President and ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan light flares during celebrations outside the party headquarters in Istanbul, June 24, 2018.

Many critics say this year's military operation in Afrin, Syria, was primarily created to boost both Mr Erdogan's reputation and nationalist sentiment prior to the elections; however, in his victory speech to supporters from the ruling party's headquarters in Ankara he said that Turkey would now act more decisively against terrorist organisations.

Turkey's incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed victory in critical elections based on unofficial results, securing an executive presidency with sweeping powers.

Mr Erdogan was declared Turkey's president by electoral board chairman Sadi Guven, who said he won a majority based on 99.9 percent of counted votes. In the immediate aftermath of the election result, the lira strengthened against the dollar, but in the longer term it will take tighter policies to avoid its downward trajectory.

"We have received the message that has been given to us in the ballot boxes".

Burcu, a 29-year-old shopkeeper in Istanbul who declined to provide his last name, told ABC News he voted for Ince and is suspicious of the official results.

President Mamnoon Hussain, on behalf of the Government and people of Pakistan, extended heartfelt felicitations to President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in the elections on Monday.

She and others in the city said they voted for the pro-Kurdish HDP, hoping it would exceed the 10 per cent threshold of votes needed to enter parliament.

The CHP's candidate for the presidential race came in second with 30.6 percent of the vote. But really, all you need to know about this election is summed up in Erdogan's campaign motto: "A great Turkey needs a strong leader".

Erdogan's closest rival, Muharrem Ince, who complained of unfair elections, has yet to formally concede defeat.

Putin sent Erdogan a telegram to congratulate him on the victory, the Kremlin said in a statement Monday.

Their members faced security problems and the mission had difficulties mostly in Diyarbakır, Ankara and Istanbul, the delegation said, criticizing the government for preventing two of their members from performing their observation mission in Turkey.

Erdogan's victory ensures he'll stay in office for 20 years - until 2023 - and ushers in a powerful new executive presidency that eliminates the prime minister's role.

But critics accuse him of ruling with an iron grip, especially after the July 2016 failed coup which was followed by a state of emergency that has seen tens of thousands arrested.

Under constitutional amendments approved after a controversial 2017 referendum, Turkey is making a transition from a parliamentary system to a presidential one.

Civil society groups and opposition parties said they had half a million volunteer observers manning polling stations, but allegations of fraud emerged as early as midday on Sunday. "With turnout of almost 90 percent, Turkey has taught the whole world a democracy lesson".

Erdogan has declared himself an "enemy of interest rates", raising fears he will pressure the central bank to cut borrowing costs after the election despite double-digit inflation.

"There is no stopping for us until we bring Turkey, which we saved from plotters, coupists and political and economic hit men, street gangs and terrorist organizations, to among the top 10 economies in the world", he said.

Separately, Luxembourg's foreign minister, Jean Asselborn, said Erdogan was now "all-powerful" and that he "has everything in his hands".

Ince told a rally on Saturday he would lift the state of emergency within 48 hours of being elected president.
