Apple will upgrade AirPods and release over-head

Sales of Apple's Home Pod speaker have reportedly fallen below expectations

While already impressive, Apple is looking to further improve the connectivity of the AirPods so that they are able to talk to the paired iPhone or iPad over a longer distance.

Slated for 2019, the earbuds will likely cost more than the existing $159 pair, and that could push Apple to segment the product line like it does with iPhones, one of the people said. In their effort to add multiple uses to pretty much all their products, they've also reportedly had internal discussions to add fitness-related components to the pods including biometric sensors, like a heart rate monitor.

The over the ear headphones will be a premium offering targeting the likes of Bose and Sennheiser.

Apple reportedly wanted to launch the headphones by the end of 2018 but development challenges have pushed the product back to early 2019.

We could see new AirPods as early as next year. Executives from hardware maker Inventec Corp.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple may be stepping up its sound game. Beats now sells a pair of noise-cancelling headphones at a list price of $350, so it seems safe to expect any Apple-branded pair to be fairly expensive. Thus far, it has mostly worked with Inventec, but builds about 30 percent of the units with Luxshare Precision Industry Co. The original version of the earbuds faced a delay after it first debuted in 2016.

High-end AirPods, a new HomePod and over-ear headphones are coming as soon as next year, reported Bloomberg. What direction Apple will take with the HomePod 2 is yet to be determined.

Previous reports have claimed the headphones would feature noise cancellation and an all-new design, challenging models now available in the $350 United States dollars to $500 price range.

For the over-ear headphones, Apple has discussed working with Tymphany, a Primax Electronics Ltd. subsidiary that makes consumer and professional audio systems, according to a person familiar with the situation. The production however, has not been started.
