Sri Lanka skipper Chandimal charged over ball-tampering

Sri Lanka will need quick wickets early on Day 2 to put pressure on the hosts

Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal was charged for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code OF Conduct.

Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal has been charged by the ICC after a ball-tampering row overshadowed the third day of his team's second Test against the West Indies.

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the umpires laid the charge on Chandimal after reviewing footage of day two, where they found evidence of a foreign substance being applied to the ball.

After discussions between officials and the players, match referee Javagal Srinath upheld Gould and Dar's decision, with the five penalty runs taking the Windies to 123 for two in response to the tourists' 253 all out.

It was on Saturday that Chandimal refused to take the field along with his teammates after the on-field umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar charged them to alter the conditions of the ball.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the team had denied any wrongdoing. The umpires suspected that the visitors' skipper Dinesh Chandimal changed the condition of the ball and made a decision to change it which didn't go down well with the team.

The Sri Lankan players were eventually advised by the SLC to take the field. The play was eventually resumed after the Sri Lankan board urged them to continue with the game.

But an hour has gone and we are still no closer to the start of the third day's play as West Indies trail Sri Lanka by 135 runs with eight wickets in hand.

Steve Smith and David Warner were stripped of the captaincy and vice-captaincy respectively and banned from playing global cricket for 12 months. The same charge was levelled against Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft who was caught on camera rubbing a piece of sandpaper on the ball against South Africa in March.

Match officials changed the ball and awarded West Indies five penalty runs over their concern about the suspected altered condition of the ball, prompting the visitors' refusal to take the field at the start of play at the Daren Sammy Stadium.

Opener Devon Smith fell for 61, having added only eight to his overnight half-century, while wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich followed up his century in the first Test with 55.

Batting a second time, Sri Lanka closed on 34 for one.
