Phil Mickelson chases after, hits moving ball on green | US Open

Phil Mickelson reacts to a shot from the fescue on the fifth hole during Saturday’s third round of the U.S. Open

Mickelson was faced with a 12-foot bogey putt and after sending it well past the hole, Lefty ran to his ball to hit it again before it went down the slope.

He said he knew the ball was going to roll off the green, which is why he made a decision to hit it while it was still moving.

Why a 2-stroke penalty and not a disqualification?

According to ESPN, that matched his worst score on a U.S. Open hole as a professional and set a career record for worst score relative to par at the U.S. Open as a pro.

But it's nothing disrespectful to me or to the U.S. Open or anything. He would end up with a 10 on the hole and with an 81 Saturday. "But it was just a moment - I think it's just a moment of madness". Taking his two-shot penalty, the extremely unusual incident divided viewers between those who condemned the action, and those who saw the amusing side of it.

Instead, in a surprising post-round interview, the American claimed that his decision to putt his moving ball back up the green was indeed a deliberate action. "As a result, he incurred a two stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 14-5. It's just one of them things that just happened".

I don't know if I was able to save a shot or not.

It was not immediately clear what was Mickelson's motive in striking the ball. Was he just frustrated with how he's played this week - he was already 10-over when the fiasco began - or was his outburst was some sort of protest against the USGA's setup?

Mickelson, while putting on the 13th green, smacked a 15 footer by the cup.

Mickelson, who has been a US Open runner-up six times, most recently in 2013, was having a miserable time Saturday before reaching 13.

It conjured up memories of John Daly hitting a moving ball that rolled off the green during the fourth round of the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He now sits 17-over for the championship.
