Boston Celtics: 5 goals for the 2018 offseason

Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown and Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant

As everyone knows by now, LeBron James will nearly certainly opt out of his contract and become a free agent.

Kyrie Irving says that he is not considering a contract extension with the Boston Celtics because it does not make financial sense.

So when Irving said Tuesday, "Contractually, financially, [an extension right now] just doesn't make any sense", Danny Ainge has to both understand and be a little concerned at the same time.

But his willingness to follow that path leaves open another possibility Boston should consider pursuing this summer: following the same script it used in getting Irving last summer by trading him this offseason. A max free-agent deal for Irving with a team that's not the Celtics next season would be worth $139 million over four years.

"The focus is exclusively on winning a championship next year". "That's really all I'm looking forward to. I'm pretty sure management and I will have a talk, but that talk won't happen now".

Me and my strength and conditioning coach, we're taking it one day at a time.

Signing a contract extension this summer rather than having a new deal next offseason will cost Kyrie Irving approximately $80 million.

With the Celtics apparently trying to acquire another superstar, it is not hard to see why Kyrie Irving could be reluctant to sign.

Irving has a player option with the Celtics for the 2019-20 season, though it appears he is likely to opt out and test free agency. "You saw guys that are literally going to be stars in this league for years to come".

Thanks to the structure of National Basketball Association contracts and increased TV revenue next year, Irving will be eligible to sign a five-year deal worth $188 million if he chooses to stay with the Celtics, who retained his Bird rights in the trade from the Cavs allowing them to go over the salary cap to retain a player.

"In this business, I've experienced it all and I've seen a lot", he tactfully replied, "so we'll see what management decides". "You just try to focus on what's important going into next year with who we have and what we're capable of".

That said, Irving and James seemed to be friendly enough during the All-Star Game and Irving started for James' handpicked team. Dolan is a tight-pocketed guy and paying two-injury prone players (Irving, Porzingis) that type of money, is not in his plans. Maybe he doesn't. I don't know. A move the Celtics tried to make during the season should have him concerned though.

The last man you need to look to is also the one that will give you the most confidence.
