Michael Cohen Dropped His Legal Representation, Is Expected to Cooperate with Mueller

Cohen likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors

Michael Cohen, the longtime personal lawyer of Donald Trump, was preparing to part ways with the legal team that has been representing him in federal court in NY, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Since then, Cohen's NY office was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and his personal finances were exposed, revealing he took money from companies hoping to gain influence in the Trump administration.

The initial report issued by ABC News claimed that Cohen was imminently preparing to cooperate with prosecutors in the aforementioned matter before the SDNY.

Cohen, the longtime personal attorney to Trump, paid $130,000 to Daniels just before the 2016 election for a nondisclosure agreement to keep her quiet about an alleged affair with the president a decade earlier. Mr. Cohen also didn't respond to a request for comment. The Times reported that once the review is complete, Cohen will seek new counsel.

President Donald Trump's attorney Michael Cohen, center, arrives at federal court in Manhattan on Thursday, April 26, 2018, with his attorney Todd Harrison, left and attorney Stephen Ryan, right.

Federal agents stormed into Cohen's domiciles on April 9 and seized a cache of records, including communications between him and Trump. If Cohen were planning to cooperate, he wouldn't need lawyers as expensive as those at McDermott, the blog says.

The investigation into Cohen is separate from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the 2016 Trump campaign.

Cohen has been referred to as President Donald Trump's pit bull, fixer, and consigliere. Cohen then went to federal court in Manhattan arguing that his attorneys should be given a first look at the materials seized in the raids for items potentially covered by attorney-client privilege before federal prosecutors could examine the haul.

That's a bit of speculation on my part - maybe there's some other reason Cohen's lawyers are leaving - but as of now, it's the only connection that's evident.

Whiting also pointed to previous news reports highlighting that Trump and his allies were nervous about Cohen flipping.

But there's little question that Trump is very anxious about what Cohen might tell prosecutors.

A pardon of Cohen may not help Trump as much as people think.
