S. Korea expects positive outcome from DPRK-US summit: Blue House

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump arrived in Singapore Sunday for an unprecedented summit, with Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal at the top of the agenda and the United States president calling it a "one-time shot" at peace.

Before Monday, official news outlets had reported only that the two leaders planned to meet, without saying where or when or offering any other specifics. It heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

DPRK stands for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Despite the White House's "maximum pressure" campaign, the North remained defiant and carried out its sixth nuclear test in September 2017.

Pyongyang has taken some steps to show sincerity, returning three United States detainees and blowing up the entrances to its nuclear test site.

A plane presumably carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in Singapore ahead of Kim's summit Tuesday with President Donald Trump. Asked by a reporter on the tarmac how he was feeling about the summit after landing in Air Force One, Trump replied: "Very good".

"Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" he tweeted ahead of the meeting. On Monday, he held talks with the Singaporean prime minister at the Istana.

The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches.

The U.S. has called for the North's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization, while Pyongyang hopes to get rewards and relief from tough sanctions in the process of its denuclearization.

The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

Kim is set to meet Tuesday with Trump in what's shaping up to be one of the most unusual summits in modern history.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said USA and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

News that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited North Korea was front page news with a big photo of him shaking Kim's hand the following day in the ruling party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun.

Trump and Kim are set to hold an unprecedented summit to discuss ways to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for security guarantees.

News agency Associated Press cited a U.S. official saying that the two leaders will be accompanied by their translators during the one-on-one for about two hours.

North Korea's Kim landed in Singapore earlier on Sunday. Kim Jong Un is not that way.
