Porsche Mission E to be called Porsche Taycan

39;Taycan' is Porsche’s new electric sedan

German automaker Porsche has revealed in a recent announcement that the production version of its first all-electric vehicle will be called the "Taycan.' Thus far, the automaker has been calling its first all-electric vehicle as 'Mission E", ever since the official unveiling of the concept in 2015.

By the end of 2019, Porsche plans to install at least 500 fast-chargers across the U.S. that will rival Tesla's Supercharger network, which consists of over 10,000 chargers worldwide.

Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) with a system output of over 600 hp (440 kW) accelerate the electric sports auto to 100 km/h in well under 3.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in under twelve seconds. The Eurasian name also signifies the launch of the first electric sports vehicle with the soul of a Porsche.

The Taycan "must be a Porsche first", Stefan Weckbach, vice president of Porsche's battery electric vehicle program, told The New York Times recently.

We'll have more, including a first drive of the Taycan, as soon as we get it.

At Porsche, the vehicle names generally have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics.

The Porsche Mission E arrived nearly three years ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, signalling Porsche's "Mission" to embrace all things "E". Elon Musk is well known for talking up the speed of cars like the Model S, but Porsche has voiced some skepticism about just how long the potent Tesla can keep that up on the track.

The battery pack that is to be fitted in the Taycan is capable of giving it a range of 300 miles (482 km), in line with all other high-end electric cars on the market today. Prices are expected to start around $80,000 to $90,000.

Porsche has said it plans to double its investment in hybrid and fully electric vehicles to more than 6 billion euros (£5.2 billion) by 2022 as parent Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) seeks to overcome an emissions-cheating scandal and tap into growing demand for greener transportation.

The novelty will be equipped with two electric motors.
