Kim Kardashian to meet Alice Marie Johnson after prison release

After Trump commuted Johnson's sentence, Kardashian said that Trump called her personally to break the news. The statement noted Johnson was known as a mentor to other inmates, and cited recommendations for clemency from prison officials.

Johnson's case caught nationwide attention after the reality-television star Kim Kardashian West took notice of her case past year and retained an attorney to help her clemency bid.

In an interview Thursday night with Fox News' Martha MacCallum on "The Story", Johnson expressed her gratitude for Trump's decision the day before to commute her sentence.

Christine Samra is a web and social media producer for KPIX 5.

According to the A.C.L.U, Alice Marie Johnson has been imprisoned since 1996 on charges of cocaine distribution, possession, money laundering, conspiracy to structuring a monetary transaction, part of a drug ring in Memphis over a period of years.

"At 63 years old I am closer to heaven than to earth", Johnson wrote the judge in her case last year. "She has used her celebrity status to lift up a specific case of injustice and give Alice the spotlight her case deserves".

Kardashian West took special interest in Johnson's case back in October.

Trump last week pardoned conservative commentator and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, convicted of making illegal campaign contributions.

Kardashian, 37, has said that breaking the news of her release to Johnson by phone "while crying together is a moment I will never forget". Her daughter, Catina Scales, said on TODAY it was unbelievable Johnson was sitting there right next to her. "I feel like my life is starting over again", an emotional Alice told reporters outside the prison, reported CNN.

During his first year and half in office he has issued a number of pardons, however, mostly involving high-profile cases.

The world has changed considerably since Johnson was arrested, she noted, telling "CBS This Morning", "There are so much new buildings, and I noticed people on the phone a lot". And he granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, which had been championed by actor Sylvester Stallone.

"I had no idea that I was even facing a sentence like that because truly I felt that people who got life without parole had committed the most heinous crimes".
