Cuba 'sonic attack': U.S. tests two more Havana embassy staff

A Chinese woman checks her documents as she walks past the U.S. Embassy in Beijing Friday

According to a source in the state Department, both are considered to be "probably new", but has not yet been "confirmed from a medical point of view".

The New York Times said that an employee evacuated from Guangzhou on June 6 likened the sounds he experienced to "marbles rolling around a metal funnel".

University of Pennsylvania researchers studied that troubling pattern among US government employees stationed in Cuba earlier this year, and now they are evaluating a similar scenario among others stationed in China, the Associated Press reports. There are about 170 US diplomats or employees and their families in Guangzhou.

Friday's alert called for people to be attentive of symptoms including "dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, cognitive issues, visual problems, ear complaints and hearing loss, and difficulty sleeping".

The statement said Cuba was informed of one case in late May where "a functionary of the (U.S.) embassy on the 27th of the same month had reported health symptoms as a result of "undefined sounds" in her residence".

The case revived fears that a United States rival has developed some kind of acoustic or microwave device after similar symptoms were reported among American diplomats and their families in Cuba in 2016.

Several other American workers at the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou have reported similar symptoms, but the exact number of people who exhibited symptoms or are medically treated are unclear, as stated in the New York Times.

The Penn team said the patients from Cuba experienced persistent disability though rehabilitation therapy customized for them seemed to help.

Canada in April also ordered families of diplomatic staff in Cuba to return home after mysterious health symptoms were detected in 10 Canadians stationed on the island.

US personnel in Havana began reporting the incidents in 2016, and they were first disclosed publicly a year ago. The consulate opened months after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Washington in 1979 and moved to its new purpose-built facility in 2013.

The medical screenings in China are continuing, Nauert said.

Until Friday, the most recent suspicious incidents disclosed by the U.S.in Cuba had been in August 2017, leading many to suspect that the incidents had stopped.

"For me I feel it's very odd".
