Meghan Markle joins Joins Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace

Queen Elizabeth

This year's celebration was special because it was newly-minted royal-by-marriage Meghan Markle's first time joining the family for the big balcony moment.

The Duchess of Sussex wore a dress by Carolina Herrera and a hat by Philip Treacy, while the Duchess of Cambridge wore a dress by Alexander McQueen and a hat by Juliette Botterill.

First the ceremonial. Meghan sat beside Harry in a horse-drawn carriage procession from Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guards parade ground where thousands of troops waited to parade a regimental flag (a Colour) in front of the Queen.

Meghan was, of course, accompanied by her husband Prince Harry and while her outfit was very classy and she made sure to wear the obligatory hat, she also showed off her shoulders when all of the other women there had long-sleeved ensembles on. The annual ceremony, involving over 1400 guardsmen and cavalry, and dating back to the reign of King Charles II, marks the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth, even though the Sovereign's actual birthday is on April 21. He will celebrate his 97th birthday Sunday.

Write Royalty, analysing details from the Court Circular, the official diary of the royal family, said the queen had conducted 125 engagements from January to the end of May.

The former Suits star joined The Queen for the first time on the Buckingham Palace balcony today with the rest of the family.

While they appeared at a private Buckingham Palace garden party three days after they Wednesday, Saturday afternoon's outing was the first time the former actress has been on full show as a royal. It's a hairstyle choice that her sister-in-law, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has learned-after much criticism-should not be used for such events, especially when the winds will play havoc. The Queen also ditched the dark sunglasses she'd been wearing after undergoing cataract surgery last month. Meghan's already looking fully at ease. laughing and smiling with her father-in-law and Kate.

As People reports, Duchess Meghan joined Harry, his brother William and wife Kate Middleton along with their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte (little Prince Louis stayed home), in addition to Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Here is this year's Trooping the colour, just in case you missed it.

The Queen's great-granddaughter then turned to younger cousin, Prince George, to school him in the art of royal etiquette.

The new Duchess of Sussex fit right in with her new in-laws during the public appearance.
