Samuel Umtiti agrees five-year contract extension with Barcelona

SAMUEL UMTITI

"A great piece of news for the Barcelona fans, Samuel Umtiti will continue to wear the Cule shirt until 2023".

Umtiti is part of the France squad which will take part in the upcoming World Cup in Russian Federation, and scored in the friendly win over Italy on Friday night.

After months of negotiating, Barcelona finally announced an agreement with Umtiti had been reached by issuing a statement early on Sunday evening.

Umtiti has featured 79 times for Barcelona since arriving from Lyon in 2016.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed that the new contract signed by French centre-back Samuel Umtiti has a release clause of €500 (£438m).

After Manchester City and Liverpool spent big on defenders Aymeric Laporte and Virgil van Dijk, respectively, in January, Manchester United were linked with a move for Umtiti.

Lluis Miguelsanz of Sport previously reported Manchester United were eyeing the defender and his meager €60 million (£52 million) buyout clause. That his release clause has reportedly been bumped up to €500 million will also come as a huge relief to everyone associated with the club, effectively ending the chances of any suitor to snap him up.

He is part of France's 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation and is expected to start alongside Real Madrid's Raphael Varane at centre-half.
