Bill Browder, a prominent financial manager and vocal Vladimir Putin critic, was briefly arrested in Spain on a Russian arrest warrant Wednesday.
Mr. Browder, a USA -born investor who has sharply criticized the Putin government, was arrested on what Spanish police and Mr. Browder said was a request from Russian Federation.
Browder has been a driving force behind the U.S.'s Magnitsky Act sanctions against Russian oligarchs, and his book, Red Notice, alleges corruption that goes up to the highest levels of the Russian government, including Vladimir Putin himself.
The financier, who is a plaintiff in the Spanish investigation, said Spain is among 15 countries following the money trail.
Browder however tweeted that Interpol had intervened and told the police "not to honor the new Russian Interpol Red Notice", referring to the worldwide police group's list of wanted people.
Browder was sentenced to nine years imprisonment on December 29, 2017 after he was found guilty of deliberate bankruptcy and tax evasion of over $48.4 million Dollars.
The financier has advocated for USA sanctions targeting Russian officials over human rights abuses.
Browder was released soon after he tweeted out a copy of the arrest warrant from the police station.
Mr Browder then posted a picture of a document linked to his arrest, detailing his legal rights and saying that he had been detained on allegations of fraud. "They won't tell me which station".
"While Russia has "repeatedly repeatedly requested Mr. Browder's arrest through Interpol", The New York Times reports, ". its requests have been refused repeatedly.
United Kingdom investor and Putin critic Browder says on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in a tweet that he has been arrested in Spain on Russian request.
According to the publication, the warrant for Browder's arrest had expired.
The US-born British citizen has led a campaign in memory of his former employee Magnitsky.
Fair Trials, a global criminal justice watchdog, said the confusion over Browder's arrest highlighted the serious problems with Interpol's system of global "wanted person" alerts.
"There is not, and never has been, a Red Notice for Mr Bill Browder". In August, Russia sought to have him put on the Interpol list as he was convicted in absentia by a Russian court of tax evasion.
British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said he spoke to Mr Browder and was "very glad that he has now been released".
