Trump not backing down on 'spy' allegations

Donald Trump Alleges Spy Placed in 2016 Presidential Campaign

Former CIA Director John Brennan-a frequent Trump critic who saw early intelligence about Russian attempts to interfere in the 2016 Presidential election and has landed in the president's crosshairs-told me that this administration's posture toward the intelligence community stands in "stark contrast" to what he experienced while working under former Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama.

The White House said in a statement that neither Flood nor Kelly "actually attended the meetings but did make brief remarks before the meetings started to relay the President's desire for as much openness as possible under the law".

Democrats, meanwhile, said that based on the information they had received, the president's claims of a political spy were unsupported.

It was not immediately clear whether the Justice Department had provided information that would allay conservatives' concerns, particularly those of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who has pushed vigorously for information about the FBI's source.

Nunes and Gowdy left about an hour later without speaking to reporters.

An initial Thursday briefing at the Department of Justice was meant to be only for Republicans, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes.

"The White House's plan to provide a separate briefing for their political allies demonstrates that their interest is not in informing Congress, but in undermining an ongoing criminal investigation", Warner said in a statement. "That is why we have insisted and will continue to insist on Congress's constitutional right to information necessary for the conduct of oversight".

The back and forth between Congress and the Justice Department over the Nunes request - one of many over the course of the Russian Federation investigation - has been simmering for weeks.

"Coupled with Comey's illegally leaked memos, this means the whole thing was a mistake and should never have happened", Giuliani said.

"The two investigations going on that I think will give us the answers to the questions that you raise", McConnell said.

P resident Donald Trump says a lot of outrageous stuff, like, for example, implying that NFL players who refuse to stand for the national anthem should be kicked out of the country.

"Nothing we heard today has changed our view that there is no evidence to support any allegation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any intelligence agency placed a "spy" in the Trump Campaign", the Democrats at the second meeting said in a joint statement.

Following protests from top Democrats and Republicans, the White House arranged a second briefing for members of the Gang of Eight, the bipartisan group of top lawmakers in both chambers who have access to the most sensitive intelligence. "The investigation is not complete and its details remain non-public".

On Thursday, two meetings were held with lawmakers to resolve issues around the documents.

For nearly a year, Donald Trump's rage about the investigation into his campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation - or, as he calls it, "the greatest Witch Hunt in American History" - has threatened to provoke him to trigger a constitutional crisis by firing the lawyers leading that investigation or by making it impossible for them to do their jobs.

The Trump administration officials met at noon at the Justice Department with Nunes, House Speaker Paul Ryan, South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy and Schiff. Negotiations over the information stalled, but restarted when Trump demanded in a tweet Sunday that the Justice Department investigate "whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes".

U.S. President Donald Trump has branded his latest attempt to discredit the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation as "spygate", part of a newly invigorated strategy embraced by his Republican colleagues to raise suspicions about the probe that has dogged his presidency since the start.

Mueller's reported probe into Stone's finances comes shortly after it was reported that the special counsel had subpoenaed two of Stone's associates.

Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's attorneys, told The Associated Press on Friday that the White House hopes to get a readout of the materials next week.
