USA gov't worker reports "abnormal" sound, pressure in China

US gov't worker reports

The unnamed American citizen assigned to the consulate in Guangzhou had reported a variety of "physical symptoms" dating from late 2017 to April this year, the U.S. embassy in Beijing said in an email. The individual was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury last week.

Though the State Department has not linked this case to any other incident, news of unusual symptoms hitting USA government employees overseas will no doubt draw comparison to a rash of incidents with US and Canadian diplomats working in Cuba.

The department also warned against attempting to locate the source of any unusual sounds.

The employee at the U.S. Consulate in the southeastern Chinese city of Guangzhou has been left with mild traumatic brain injury, U.S. officials tell CBS News.

"Instead, move to a location where the sounds are not present".

Meanwhile, the US State Department stated that the US consulate worker in southern China that had earlier reported symptoms similar to those of mild brain injury and head concussion returned to the US for further examination.

"We can not at this time connect it with what happened in Havana, but we are investigating all possibilities", a United States embassy official told Reuters.

"Twenty-four people have had symptoms and findings consistent with what looks like a mild traumatic brain injury", State Department medical director Dr. Charles Rosenfarb told a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee January 9 "The findings suggest that this is not an episode of mass hysteria".

The State Department was taking the incident very seriously and working to determine the cause and impact, the embassy said.

"The Chinese government has assured us they are also investigating and taking appropriate measures", she said. -Cuban relations, while investigators have chased theories including a sonic attack, electromagnetic weapon or a flawed spying device.

Around November 2016, USA diplomats based in Cuba started to complain of odd ailments, including dizziness, nausea and hearing problems. Media reports have suggested that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has not been able to verify any evidence to support the sonic weapon theory.

"The cause (of their symptoms) remains unknown but could be human-made", the Canadian government concluded.

In the Cuba incident past year, 21 people fell sick with injuries including hearing loss, cognitive issues and sleep difficulties in what the State Department called an "attack". Symptoms included headaches and hearing loss.
