Leahy Rips Pai On Net Neutrality, Rural Broadband Coverage

The public will get a chance to weigh in on neutrality

The Senate tapped the Congressional Review Act to block the rollback, and if signed into law, it would prohibit the FCC from upending net neutrality rules in the future.

"Net neutrality is critical to maintaining a free and open internet, and I'm thrilled that the Senate passed this bipartisan resolution to restore these protections today", said Senator Shaheen.

Three republicans in the Senate, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and John Kennedy of Louisiana, joined Senate democrats in their vote to save net neutrality.

The bill would reverse a decision the FCC made last December, to undo net neutrality rules, put in place by the Obama administration.

Consumer advocates cheered the Senate's vote, with many groups noting that most Americans support the Obama-era net neutrality rules.

The 2015 rules were meant to ensure a free and open internet, give consumers equal access to Web content and bar broadband service providers from favoring their own material or others'. Critics, including the Trump administration, believed this ruling was stifling innovation.

Senate Democrats - and a handful of Republicans - voted to overturn the FCC's net neutrality repeal yesterday, a move they say is the first step to ensuring an open internet, though the bill's prospects are unclear. "We don't let water companies or phone companies discriminate against customers; we don't restrict access to interstate highways, saying you can ride on the highway, and you can't", Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said. "Today the United States Senate took a big step to fix the serious mess the FCC made when it rolled back net neutrality late a year ago", she said in a statement.

Reaction at the FCC followed a predictable script. Chairman Ajit Pai stood by the ending of the Obama-era rules.

The Trump campaign had net neutrality on its platform through the election process and made repealing it one of the only campaign promises they have kept.

"I am pleased that today the United States Senate voted in support of the entrepreneurs, small businesses, and consumers in New Hampshire and across the country who rely on a free and open internet to help them succeed", Senator Hassan said. But with the Republicans in power, the big ISPs have been putting all of their eggs into that basket, spreading misinformation that targets conservatives and trying to turn the net neutrality debate into a political circus.

He and other supporters of the rules argue that they will prevent AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and other Internet service providers from acting as gatekeepers for Americans' online access.

There has been no reference for weeks to what is presumably an ongoing investigation by the FCC's Inspector General into Pai's subsequent Sinclair-friendly decisions, raising the likelihood that it could be used as this season's cliffhanger. This was done by legally defining the internet as a utility like electric or heating fuel which should be accessible to all at a controlled price.
