First female Central Intelligence Agency director confirmed

Senate confirms Gina Haspel as CIA chief despite her torture past

The final Senate vote was 54-45.

After Trump went for former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo as the USA secretary of state to replace Rex Tillerson, the position became vacant and he nominated Haspel to fill it. Haspel, 61, is associated with the Central Intelligence Agency for three decades now and has built her career as an operative, functioning overseas as a head spy in secret torture cells.

The vote, which ran contrary to four other Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump won in 2016, set off an immediate tweet storm from Republicans who signaled they will make that vote and others she's made against Trump nominees an issue in Missouri's Senate election this year. National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said Haspel has integrity and both frontline and executive intelligence expertise. Pompeo was confirmed as the new Secretary of State in January.

There she oversaw the use of harsh interrogation techniques such as waterboarding.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, said in a floor speech that Haspel "offered up nearly the classic Washington nonapology".

There have been voices in the Senate, too, over Haspel's appointment.

Haspel even allegedly ordered destruction of the video of the interrogations of Zubaydah and his mate Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the website said.

"Gina Haspel is among the most qualified people to be nominated for the position".

During the hearing, Haspel defended her past actions and refused to criticize her colleagues for their tactics at the time. US-based Centre for Constitutional Rights also felt the same about Haspel, according to the website.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the nomination was not just about Haspel but also about the USA grappling with its past mistakes. If Democrats had not voted for Haspel, she would not have been confirmed because three Republican Senators were opposed to her nomination. "I was not on the sidelines, I was on the frontlines in the Cold War and I was on the frontlines in the fight against Al Qaeda", she said in response to a question from Sen.

Republican Senator John McCain, who has been away from Washington all year while battling brain cancer, urged the Senate not to vote for Haspel. Rand Paul of Kentucky; and Sen. They said the US needs to close the book forever on the program that marred America's image with allies overseas. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and red- and purple-state Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (WV), Sen. Joe Donnelly (IN), Sen. Bill Nelson in Florida.

"This has not been an easy decision", Warner said, adding that he'd met and talked with Haspel many times in the past several weeks. The Senate has now rewarded that atrocious conduct by promoting someone that reportedly administered it to lead one of the government's most powerful agencies.
