Facebook has suspended 200 apps as it investigates misuse of data

Facebook says it has suspended around 200 apps so far as part of data misuse audit

Currently Facebook has "large teams of internal and external experts" working on the investigation.

It is being reported that Ime Archibong, Facebook's VP of Product and Partnership had announced that Facebook has suspended near about 200 apps that were found guilty of carrying out some suspicious activities. "It was installed by around 300,000 people who shared their data as well as some of their friends' data", Zuckerberg said.

Facebook has revealed that during its continuing app investigation, around 200 apps thus far have been suspended for possible data misuse.

In 2014, a new platform policy offering greater protection of user data reduce the personal information that apps can access. The first phase, now underway, consists of Facebook employees and external experts reviewing apps to identify those which had access to an extremely large amount of user data.

Today, Facebook published an update into its investigation of certain apps.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously said any apps that refused to cooperate or failed an audit would be banned from Facebook. Even those 200 suspended apps will need to be further investigated via interviews and RFI requests, and we can likely expect the figure to go up as more third-party apps are audited.

The app had operated for four years when, in April of this year, Facebook suspended it, the social network confirmed. If they did, Facebook said it would ban them and let people know via a dedicated page on its Help Center, just like it did with Cambridge Analytica.

The investigation net has been cast beyond Cambridge Analytica which allegedly exploited Facebook data vulnerabilities to farm user data. There, you'll be able to see which apps you now allow to access your Facebook data - as well as which apps you've removed and apps that formerly had access to your data - and can then revoke privileges accordingly. Facebook will continue updating users on its progress against data privacy violations over the weeks until the audit process is complete for all apps. This first stage of review may have resulted in the suspension of hundreds of apps but that doesn't mean if all of them actually engaged in data misuse.
