Afghan security forces, 8 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan clashes

Multiple blasts and gun battle in eastern Afghan city

The residents feared that the Taliban radical movement would gain control of the city if the government did not send more troops soon, the media outlet said.

The clashes started at about 2am early Tuesday after Taliban insurgents started clashes in the city, a member of the provincial council Dadullah Qane said, adding that "clashes are ongoing in several parts of the city and close to National Directorate of Security (NDS) department".

Bakhtawer said casualties were high among security forces, but could not provide a precise number.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed tweeted that Farah has been attacked from multiple directions early this morning, and so far all check points around the city, the NDS headquarters, a police station and multiple other check points inside the city have been overrun.

One of the attacks was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group and the other by the Taliban.

Police special forces from Kandahar and commandos from Herat have also been deployed to the province which borders Iran, according to Afghan officials.

NATO's Resolute Support mission in Kabul tweeted that the Afghan army, supported by U.S. airpower including A-10 Thunderbolts, was "on the offensive" and the city "remains under govt. control". Dozens of Afghan security forces and Taliban insurgents have been killed and injured.

"If the security forces can't take control of the whole city by the end of the day, then it will be very hard to take control of the city anytime soon", Samim said.

But inside the city residents reported clashes were continuing.

Satar Hissaini, a tribal elder in Farah, told AFP that although the situation is "very bad", the city was being defended. The Taliban had captured a police district on the city's edge, he said.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes between Taliban and security forces over the past few months.

The latest reports say the terrorist group is still two-miles away from the city center. and the battle is still underway.

The insurgents released a statement warning residents to remain inside their homes and called on people to "stay calm". There are plans for a section of the multi-billion-dollar TAPI (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) gas pipeline to traverse it.

The Taliban have pledged to cooperate with the project.
