Nadal's magic on clay continues

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost his shoe midway through a rally during his semi-final match with Pablo Carreno Busta

Rafael Nadal has won this year's Barcelona Open against Greek opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas, retaing his world number one ranking.

Nadal on Saturday defeated David Goffin 6-4, 6-0 for his 400th win on clay, reaching the Barcelona Open final for the 11th time.

The Spaniard though humbly acknowledged how hard the ride had been and how excited he was by the achievement saying, "I'm very happy for the victory against a very hard opponent".

The local favorite though lauded Tsitsipas and opined the teenager has an "amazing future" in the sport.

"It has been impossible for me to stop Nadal, I've tried but I could not, it's been a great lesson", he said. "I enjoyed the whole week and had great support from the crowd", the champion said. The title is his 11th career singles title in Barcelona.

Nadal got revenge for his defeat to Klizan at the 2014 Beijing Open quarterfinals, earning his third career win over the Slovak in their fourth encounter.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios continues to battle an elbow injury in the lead up to the second grand slam tournament of the year, and Neds have the world number 24 at $26 to hoist the trophy.

Nadal is expected to be back in action at the Madrid Masters next week.

Tsitsipas, though he was outmatched in the final, showed his fair share of flair in the tournament as well, complementing his ball-popping power with delicate drop shots. Odds correct at time of publication.

Tsitsipas started well and held serve in the first game, but the match was promptly disrupted by rain, forcing a short break in play.

"I knew the chances to win were small, but my confidence was rising in every match and while I was expecting a little better today, congratulations to Rafa", Tsitsipas said. "But we really do need one or two guys, whether it's Del Potro or Thiem or somebody to step up and say "I can do this, I'm ready to compete with him" and raise their game, because the game needs it".
