Corbyn heaps pressure on May about her time at Home Office

Amber Rudd took over from Theresa May as Home Secretary in July 2016

The appointment of Sajid Javid as Amber Rudd's replacement as Home Secretary was touted by Tory MPs as a smart choice given his capable Cabinet work so far, and particularly amid the Windrush scandal. Actually, they were always British.

The furor has grown since The Guardian reported that some people who came to the United Kingdom from the Caribbean in the decades after World War II had recently been refused medical care in Britain or threatened with deportation because they could not produce paperwork proving their right to reside in the country.

A spokesman for May said Javid, who had been minister for housing, communities and local government, "is one of the most experienced ministers around the cabinet table".

Rudd's resignation after the Guardian revealed that in a leaked 2017 letter to May, Rudd had told the Prime Minister of her intention to increase deportations by 10 per cent, seemingly at odds with her denials that she was aware of deportation targets.

The opposition Labour Party, which had repeatedly called on Rudd to resign, said May was responsible and should explain her own role in the government's immigration policies. "If you talk to members of the public they want to ensure that we are dealing with people who are here illegally", she said.

May and Rudd have been under increasing fire since the so-called Windrush scandal first emerged several months ago.

"He has to bring forward plans to invest more money in community policing, provide certainty to the Windrush generation and start providing answers on what future the 3 million European Union citizens in this country would face under the Conservatives' Brexit deal".

Rudd, who was only appointed to the Home Office in 2016, was seen as a moderate on the European Union and a balancing force in a cabinet containing several heavyweight pro-Brexit figures.

"They came to this country after the Second World War to help rebuild it, they came from Commonwealth countries, they were asked to come in to (do) work that some people would describe as unattractive - my dad worked in a cotton mill, he worked as a bus driver", he said. They were always British citizens.

There are no such estimates available for illegal immigrants from India but another recent study by Oxford University's The Migration Observatory has said that 6,580 Indian were deported in 2016, the top country of enforced removals or voluntary departures from Britain.

Sajid Javid said his parents came to the United Kingdom from the Commonwealth in the 1960s, and he was "personally committed, and invested, in resolving the difficulties faced by the people of the Windrush generation". Under May's rule as Home Secretary, regulations were tightened up and thousands of people found themselves without the required documentation as she openly created a "hostile environment" for migrants. Policies from that time included sending out vans to tell illegal immigrants to "go home", making regular deportations and resistance to rescue operations that pulled drowning migrants from the Mediterranean.

She stood down last night, in the wake of the Windrush scandal.

May serve as Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016 under then-Prime Minister David Cameron.
