Suspect who killed deputy caught

John Williams

The team of law enforcement officers who found and captured fugitive John Williams.

The search for John Williams, suspected of shooting and killing Somerset County Sheriff's Corporal Eugene Cole, has ended.

Cole's death marks the first time a ME police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty in almost 30 years.

Lancaster said that over the four days, more than 200 officers from 28 federal, state, municipal and local law enforcement groups joined the search for Williams. "Gene Cole, and he was brought to justice using Cole's handcuffs".

Authorities released images they say show Williams leaving the store that he went to following the killing of Sheriff's Deputy Cole.

Lancaster said Cole's family members are "extremely grateful for the efforts, they are relieved that we now have the person who killed Gene in custody". The Maine Department of Corrections Commissioner, Joseph Fitzpatrick, said Williams is being held in a "high custody" cell. Eugene Cole early Wednesday morning in Norridgewock has triggered an intensive search for 29-year-old John Williams in and around the heavily wooded rural community about 60 miles (96 kilometers) west of Bangor. Along the way, they found tracks and other "critical evidence" that kept them believing they had him surrounded and were closing in on him.

"The suspect would not facilitate in displaying his face for the photograph to be taken, so we had to facilitate that", Cote said. He's expected to make his initial court appearance in the next few days.

Cote referred questions about Williams' court appearance to the ME attorney general's office.

It's unclear what preceded the shooting, but Cole had been involved in the arrest of Williams' girlfriend several days earlier, and Williams was anxious about being arrested himself for failing to appear in court in MA on firearm charges the day of the shooting.

Williams was arraigned on March 22, posting $5,000 bail-reduced from the state's originally asked-for $10,000-on March 31.
