IOS 11.3.1 rolls out with iPhone display fix

Having a majority of its users on the latest version of iOS makes it significantly easier for Apple to fix security holes, introduce new features, and insure that its products work well together.

"iOS 11.3.1 improves the security of your iPhone and iPad and addresses an issue where touch input was responsive on some iPhone 8 devices because they were serviced with non-genuine replacement displays", Apple said in its release notes.

In comparison, the majority of Android installs (26%) are on Marshmallow, which first debuted back in 2015, followed by Nougat at 23%, which debuted in 2016.

Coming to the Security Update 2018-001 does its part to fix the vulnerability in macOS High Sierra 10.13.4.

Apple just rolled out iOS 11.3.1 with a fix for third-party iPhone displays that stopped working properly after an earlier software update. The update is available for iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later, iPod touch 6th generation. To be more specific, the update disabled touch functionality on iPhone 8s that were fixed using third-party displays.

In its release notes, Apple also warns users against using "non-genuine replacement displays". Though many developers were quick to jump onboard the bandwagon in order to take advantage of Apple's new flagship, some however (especially Google) kinda slacked to get things up to speed. The update also patches a spoofing issue that existed in the handling of URLs and could let maliciously crafted text messages to process UI spoofing.

That doesn't mean Apple isn't still exceedingly profitable: The iPhone X and its premium price captured 35% of all smartphone profits in Q4 2017, and Apple made 90% of all smartphone profits over that time. Google employs automated, AI-powered screening and monitoring of apps that go into the Play Store but not a few manage to slip through the cracks, as easily seen by the number of malware reports popping up every month.
