Amid Bid To Block Telegram, Russian Regulator Warns Facebook

Russia's watchdog may block Facebook if network fails to comply with laws

"Yesterday Russian authorities started blocking Telegram (popular encrypted messenger) and Amazon (and Google) server IP's country-wide", he wrote in the Reddit post.

Russia's media regulator has blocked more than 4 million IP addresses after a court approved its request to shut the app down. The authorities also blocked a significant number of Amazon and Google IP addresses, claiming that Telegram was using them in an attempt to get round the ban.

Chikov reported that his Agora global human rights group had received 73 complaints in 24 hours from online stores, texi services, language schools and other websites hosted by the Amazon cloud service in Russian Federation.

Durov rejected as "unconstitutional" Russian officials' demands to turn over encryption keys to allow the Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, to access users' messages on Telegram to intercept communications of terrorists. Snowden voiced criticism of Russian Federation in a Twitter post about the messenger app Telegram, which Moscow recently banned.

Zharov's remarks about Facebook were published amid controversy over the regulation's attempt to block the popular messaging app Telegram, which has met with mixed results. He also thanked Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft "for not taking part in political censorship".

Team Empire, an eSports organization, also reported problems with using Twitch in Russian Federation, tweeting that "because Russian Federation tries to shut down Telegram and fails, Twitch\Steam\Twitter won't load properly". The watchdog has faced trouble in blocking Telegram, since it is using Amazon and Google's cloud servers.

Roskomnadzor might block Facebook, if the social network does not comply with the requirements of the Russian law.

The online games Guild Wars and World of Warships both said their users were having trouble logging on as a result of Roskomnadzor's blocking of IP addresses.
