Theresa May 'seeks full role' in Syria strikes

Syrian tanks assemble on the outskirts of Douma on Sunday in an operation to retake Eastern Ghouta

Theresa May received unanimous cabinet backing for United Kingdom military action against Syrian regime targets after senior ministers were briefed by Sir Mark Sedwill, the national security adviser, on the intelligence case pointing to President Assad's culpability for the Douma attack.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump held a meeting Thursday afternoon with his team to discuss the situation.

Mattis said that although the United States has no hard proof, he believes the Syrian government is responsible for Saturday's attack.

Al-Jaafari was quoted by SANA news agency as saying that the Syrian government was ready to facilitate the teams' entry into any point in Douma, Eastern Ghouta's largest town. A joint military operation, possibly with France rather than the U.S.in the lead, could send a message of worldwide unity about enforcing the prohibitions on chemical weapons.

Trump has slammed Russian Federation for its partnership with "Gas Killing Animal" Assad, spurring concerns that a U.S. strike could lead to a conflagration with Russian Federation, which has major military facilities at Tartus and Khmeimim and works cheek-by-jowl with Syria forces that could be targeted.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it is "vital that parliament has the chance to debate and decide in advance" of any military action, which he warned "risks a unsafe escalation of the conflict".

Geopolitics specialist Dominique Moisi, a senior adviser at the Montaigne Institute?think tank in Paris, said "we have said that we were not allowing the use of chemical weapons, that this was a red line ..."

Meanwhile, Russia has called for a UN Security Council meeting on Syria on Friday.

In April past year Trump ordered Tomahawk strikes on the Shayrat Airbase in response to a similar chemical weapons attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhun.

Corbyn has said any action in Syria should be put to a parliamentary vote.

A YouGov poll published on Thursday showed just one in five British voters supported a missile strike on Syria.

They also said the U.S.in conjunction with other countries has compiled intelligence, including images, that indicates the Assad regime carried out last weekend's fatal attack.

A spokesman for May declined to comment on the report. May isn't legally required to do that, though it has become conventional since the 2003 invasion of Iraq for lawmakers to be given the chance to vote before British forces are deployed.

The Times reports that "the largest USA air and naval strike force since the 2003 Iraq war" is now heading towards Syria, and that US-led strikes are expected to begin "within the next three days".

British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force.
